Since there are quite a few noobs on here and people are looking to start selling motorcycle gear on here (see site discussion thread) I thought I would just make a post to say DONT EVER BUY A USED HELMET!
thats right boils and ghouls, they only work for one good impact, so buying used might mean ur buying one thats as useful as wearing a pillow strapped to ur head

The danger is, is that the external shell of the helmet may look fine (or have a small stone chip) but the internal foam and construction is completly destroyed. The only real way you can tell if damage has occurred is to cut the helmet in half and examine the foam/construction.
I have seen helmets that have literally bounced off the road at 60-70km's and externally only have a small mark/no mark at all.
or fall off and get smooshed like a watermelon, which no one wants to see
well, i do kinda....but not really

i was about to comment about saying dont buy used helmet no matter what. your head is one of the most important thing, everything interact with your brain from your head to your toes. buying a brand new helmet is the way to go. helmet is the only thing you should buy brand new, others you can find it cheap anywhere.

Note also that helmets usually only have a 5 year shelf life, so another reason not to go 2nd hand.

a new helmet is from $60 or so upwards. No excuse to scamp on it :)
60 bux for a new helmet? where are u getting yours from????
my kbc was 400
some of the shoies were like 1200
i figure best not to skimp on the thing protecting literally who u are. broken legs and arms heal, maybe ur even crippled, but u mess up ur brain u might as well be dead in alot of cases

The cheapest AS1698 approved helmet is $60. But I'm sure you want to have something better than the minimum requirements, especially when the helmet is the only thing between your head and the road.
Still, a cheap new AS1698 is potentially better than a used $400 helmet which might have been dropped on the floor or been through an accident.

its a RAYS from MCA's here in sydney. Just basic and generic looking but do the job. Has the current australian standards sticker so its safe.
My point is there is no reason to buy a 2nd hand helmet !

good advice. I don't see the point in buying a second hand helmet for use in a car on the track either. I paid $70 for a brand new (open face) AS1698 helmet. Cash converters was looking for $69 for something similar (but much older and used).

Some trackday organises inspect the helmet too. If it "looks" old, they might reject the helmet. At $60, it is cheaper to buy a new one. Even renting one on track day is almost $20. Not worth it.
