snapped RCA plugs

hey ppl
my amp was bumped by something in my boot resulting in 2 rca's for the sub and 1 for the 6x9 bending and snapping, ive managed to get the broken tips out of the amp but i was wondering if it was possible to replace the plugs off the actual cables instead of buying and running new ones, and also will this have any effect on sound quality if it is possible??
if possible this will save me a bit of cash and a fair bit of time and headache as the rca's run underneath the carpet the whole way through and replacing them is veeeerry time consuming

it is possible. If you get another set of plugs you should be able to dismantle them and you will see that there is two terminals underneat the plastic shielding of the connector (one connects to the pin, one to the surround). The problem you may face though is creating a short between the two wires which could ultimately do damage to ur equipment. if you are careful, and your soldering skills are up to scratch i believe it could be possible. As for sound quality, that may depend on the quality of the joint between the wires and the connector.

oh k cheers for that, is it possible to get new tips? Like from dick smith or Tandy? Or do u meen connect the wires themselves to the amp channel?

haha...yeh, you should be able to buy some new connectors from some sort of electronics store, im sure dick smith or tandy should have something...by no means connect the wires directly to the amp, thats just asking for trouble...If its possible, try to have a look inside the current plugs to give u an idea of what is happening inside and you should be able to identify the two terminals. At that point u should probably mark the wires so u when u reattach them to a new plug you do it the right way.

rcas cost 7 dollars for 5 metres at strathfield car audio
and so far havent had any interference noise etc
im pretty sure you wouldn save much if any money on if you just bought terminals instead

Buy new wiring and it is easier and safer if you are not used to soldering. Otherwise, I buy new gold plated RCA plugs for $3.25 from Jaycar, or the standard plastic ones for $0.68 each.

Gach - I think ur talkin about speakerwire, but also man it's just too time consuming to run the wires through the car I'd rather just replace the tips to avoid a wasted sunday afternoon

also prob be easier to change the wire than tips

depends, if your pretty good on the soldering it should only take about 10-15 minutes to replace the tips...but if you have to take apart the whole car to replace the cabling that may take a while...

if youve got someone who can do it, then go for it, save replacing the whole lead.

but let this be a lesson, always have the amp secured out of the way so nothing hits it

personally i would replace the RCA's. just buy some new ones and try not to be stingy! ;)
