hey oz peeps
i had my rims for a long tym and just wanted a change. instead of buying new ones that would of cost me $1000+ i thought id respray them :) which cost me around $30

Aim: to make your rims look sex spec once again

required:
3m tape
toilet scrubber (lol its all i had at work)
a pack of playing cards
good degreaser
enamel primer
engine enamel paint (colour of your choice)
red spray paint
top clear coat

these are the rims im going to be painting:
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/schnorky40/P270209_131301.jpg

Step 1:
degrease all the dirt and brake dust from your wheels and give it a good rise down and allow them to dry.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/schnorky40/P150309_122301.jpg

Step 2:

Place rim flat down and use the playing card and slot them in between the tire and rim making sure they overlap.

Step 3:
give a good two coats of primer!!
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/schnorky40/15032009.jpg

Step 4:
Now use the red spray paint and paint the rim of the tire. doesnt matter bout overspraying on to the primered rim just dont go overboard. A good two coats should do it.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/schnorky40/15032009001.jpg

Step 5:
Now the hard part, carefully tape up the red lip, cutting the top of the 3m tape so it can bend around the rim smoothly so theres no creases. sorry dont have any pics of this but you catch my drift.

Step 6:
Now spray the whole rim, working from outside the rim to the centre works the best. 2-4 coats

Step 7:
wait for the paint to dry and peel od the tape. if your looking for a matte black stop here!!! you should be happy with the product :)
if you want a gloss black add another 3 coats of gloss
mind you the gloss coat also protects the paint from stonechips.

just a heads up guys for anything paint the longer you take to prep and the more effort you put into the prep work the better the finish.

yet I'll get you a close up, it looks pink in the pics because I used a mates can that was colour coded for his prelude so it's not the redest colour, yer I might go back to white with a red lip or might go a metalic bronze :) c how that goes thanx everyone

hey nisboi40, how long did it take for the paint to dry on each layer (and the final one) before you can put them back on?

i've got all the stuff now and am thinking of doing this on Anzac Monday :D

hey mate
not sure how long i left it i just waitind till it was tounch dry
i did them at work so the black paint was still abit wet when i put the top coat on, i put them on carefully so made sure i didnt scratch it and when i got home (40mins)
not a scratch and all dry:)
depends on how many coats you do of the paint and how heavy you decide to paint it
cheers

i just hand enough cans to do the job but i recon you should buy 2 cans paint and two primer and 1 top coat... i had couple scruff marks on mine too i didnt worry bout them the paint filled in some of the gaps so you dont really notice it at all. if you want them gone you can try sanding them down start of ruff grit then work your way to very fine

thanks guys!!!

nisboi40
07-02-2011, 03:41 PM
the trick is to take your time drying don't rush and light coats, and takes time sticky taping the lip the better you do it the better it will turn out. good luck :)
