if i were to fit a breather filter on my rocker cover would this be considered legal (emissions)? or do i need that hose from the rocker to the intake arm to be connected?

You need a hose from the rocker cover to the intake arm to be legal. Depends a lot on the cop who is inspecting your car as well.

Would it make a difference? (A hose as opposed to a breathing filter)

When I got defected I was told that it's a fire hazard and that it increases induction noise ( in theory anyway,) therefore illegal.
I doubt in practice it makes that much difference.
But yeah really depends on the cop.

with a breather the engine vents oil fumes, the intake arm, the intake actually breathes in the oil so that it doesn't vent. Its prob just as bad cos your engine actually burns it.
THe best way is a catch can, but you can get defected for it like i was once. The catch can stores the oil so you don't vent or burn oil. Its a stupid rule that you can't have a catch can system, without getting it engineered, stupid cops.

just shows how bright cops can be. A pod filter would increase induction noise but a breather don't make noise

Having the tube between the rocker cover and the intake arm doesn't send much oil into the combustion chamber. You get more oil from the PCV to the intake manifold, and that is where your oil catch can should be placed, not between the rocker cover and intake arm.

exactly what i was thinking.
i need my car to be in good nick for a mod plate. not to sure how to set up a catch can so i might just goto repco and buy some line and hook it up.
and by the sounds of things everyon is getting defected for it so il just put the pipe on!
thankyou all

i dont think noise would be the problem though.

Yes it is illegal. Must be a closed system to be legal.

I used to run one directly of the cover and it gathered oil over 12 months when my car was NA. Then after i turbo'd it i got a Greddy oil catch and put a new breather on it and havent had a problem since. I even got a permit for it at the pits after explaining the theory of a catch can to the examiner because he didnt know what it did when i asked to get a permit for it.
They are illegal though. By australian law they say that any omissions from a car need to pass through a catalytic converter. Thats the main reason why screamers and bov's are illegal, and that they cause noise pollution

there's a few designs that are legal and work well, Marko bought a nice one the other day, that actually does its job, worth the money :D

Marko has a this catch can. It vents to Atmosphere, therefore illegal.

what if instead of using the breather i could pipe it back into the intake. it would save oil being spat into my intake..
and dave, my dad dont know sht about defects, hes just a standard cop. its state traffic branch that will get me...but he hates my car and everything in it lol. he would defect it if he pulled me over i reckon...

i did had 2 different colours even, it didn't make any difference on my b16. Had to take it off for engineering cos they wouldn't engineer it with the breather.
Try it yourself the breather DOES make noise. Anywhere there is air exchange there is sound. Shows how bright you can be;)

yeah if you plumbed it back to the intake arm it would be ok.
But in NSW they pull the crappy excuse of 'Not standard' to give you a defect ticket. I dun think they ever read the ADR standards on modifications

Not to get into a bitch convo about how cops hand out yellows but really they can hand out a yellow for what ever they want. I've had some crappy reasons to be honest and you bring it over the pits and the inspector looks at it and laughs and says "yeh thats bullsh1t" and marks it off.

yup same...i've had the same problem in the past.
they said to me 'what did you do to piss him off so bad?' & also 'gosh they defect you for anything these days'

well ive had 14 yellows and 1 red (yellow stuck in the middle of the window and needed the car towed from the spot) but that was when i was 17-19 when i had p plates etc and i was possibly a little stupid on the roads and if they never caught me doing over the speed which was 90% of the time when i clearly was they would just give me a yellow instead, for something stupid might i add. But i guess it was my fault really.
23 now and i havent had a yellow in close to 2 years maybe more, because i drive like a nanna and when needed i thrash it which is rare these days. In the end its just easier to drive like a nanna not attract attention and not get yellows.
Then i can enjoy the real tastes like Screamers :) and 10.5 inch wide rears with wide guards and bulk camber.

dont get one until a mod plate is issued :D
but those ones in the pic arent cheap (but its the best avail on the international market), the cusco item however was from memory 320 or less installed? looks mint in the bay as it sits where the oem clutch reservior is located (they supply a bracket in the kit which moves it over a bit to the right for it to fit :D) been looking at one for awhile now
