View Full Version : DIY: UEC and Throttle body cleaner - s2k

Did these today, have done them on my other cars, and i must say after doing them to my s2k the car feels so much better. idle is so smooth, throttle response is increased, and i can feel a slight gain in power.

I highly recommend these to all cars with higher kms, and in good practice shoudl be done every oil change. Parts i used were a carby/throttle body cleaner from bursons, and Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner.

anyway onto the diy. first up the Throttle body cleaner.

very easy to do, just get a bottle from your local bursons, autobarn, supercheap etc.
1. unclip airbox cover, loosen clamp holding intake pipe to throttle body, and remove the throttle body.
2. open the throttle using your hand, and spray the throttle body cleaner onto the butterfly valve and into the throttlebody
3. get an old rag, and with the throttle held open, clean the butterfly valve on both sides, and the edges as well.
4. start car after reconnecting intake pipe, and rev to purge the crap out.
5. reassemble intake piping etc

Upper Engine Cleaner
-This stuff is awesome, and should be done at every oil change. You can get it from subaru (it is called upper engine cleaner, i believe it is ~$10 a can). It cleans all the gunk from the manifold out.

1. Warm car up to normal running temp and turn off car.
2. locate a vacuum line into the intake manifold. I used this one (see pic attached)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t34/JAEYON15/BA24KI/Photo174.jpg

3. spray about half the can into the tube (red arrow) and let it sit for 10 minutes.
4. start the car (may require a couple of goes, this is normal), rev the car to prevent it from stalling, and spray the remainder of the can into the tube
5. as the can empties, turn off the car and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
6. Start the car, and rev it to purge the stuff out of the car. You will get alot of white smoke out the back, keep revving (i kept it between 2k-7000rpm) until you no longer see white smoke coming out the back.
7. Reconnect the vac line and take it for a drive!

The procedures for both is very very simple, and it makes quite a big difference, especially on cars with higher kms due to the build up of crap in them (my throttle body butterfly valve was black!). do them before an oil change, and then change the oil.

Good work..
I use Subaru's Upper Engine Cleaner as well and I must also say it's good stuff. The procedures and outcomes as described by jaeyon are correct. The white smoke coming out from the exhaust is normal and FUN :D.... Be careful as the neighbours might call up EPA to complain about the smog and noise pollution LOL!

I always wanted to do this,so I bought some engine cleaner/conditioner today from repco - $15 and it's a Japanese product in a silver bottle.

Thanks Jaeyon for giving me a push hehe

The reason I didn't try it already is I read about engine's seizing using 'Seafoam' a similair product in the US.But heaps of people do this without a problem,so I'm going for it.I'm sure there won't be a problem, that is just rare cases related to Seafoam. The stories are on the net if anyone wishes to search em'

U can spray it straight into the TB also, half the can, filling up the Intake manifold, let it sit for 5 minutes, crank it over and feed the other 1/2 through.

Will report back with results in a week!

lol was about to do a review on this... change UEC to "Upper Engine Cleaner" as most won't know what it is.

I completely agree, the hype is no lie, my car feels so much better but the fumes burn the eyes :p

BUT its $17 a can. Can only get it from Subaru Parts and NOT the dealerships... wasted time last Sat going to a dealer.

had to drive it on the motorway though for the exact reason EuroAccord13 said... you have to keep revving the car till the smoke disappears and it's smokey.

On the plus side although i know my cat is melted in places, but the UEC managed to clear up what looks to be crusted burned oil from the cat or the muffler.

I was worried about the same issue but the way i see it, the Subaru instructs to spray half the can (75g) into the engine and since its for subbie's displacements are at least 2.0l right? I have a 1.6l so i sprayed just over a quarter when engine is off and sprayed the rest while running.

Get the Subaru UEC Beeza, you won't regret it... i've tried a few other brands of engine cleaner and throttle body cleaner before and this by far is the best. I was skeptical also since no had previeously written a review here, but after scouring the net, nothing but the greatest of praise for this product.

you can also get it from ford parts. i dont know why youd go to a dealership to buy parts lol, i dont know of any dealers that actually do hold parts (i work at vw myself)

yeah didn't know and it was on a Saturday... missed the parts store by 10mins because i went to the dealer. It's coz I got used to my local Honda and Nissan dealer having the parts dept in the same complex.

jaeyon, my only other thing you'd probably want to add to your first post is:

"Hold the extension straw as you spray" because the first time i did this ages ago with throttlebody cleaner the straw got sucked into the manifold... ABSOLUTE PITA to remove without taking the IM off!

good idea, but dont spray throttle body cleaner into the intake manifold. it should be used sparingly.

the UEC bottle allows for the straw to be clipped in, i find that its almost impossible to spray the can while revving the car and then having to hold the straw. the car will stall if you dont keep revs up

- i used feeler gauges to push the throttle rotor to rev ~3000rpm
- for the thin vac line you used, insert straw in there and pinch the vac line to hold the straw.

trust me that clip in straw comes off... mine came off on my b16 at ~4000rpm when i was spraying into pcv valve to IM hole

from the photo shows, should I use something to block the regulator?

did this on the weekend aswell. car was idling a bit funny so thought i would give it a clean.

i simply took off my intake charge pipe
got my brother to hold the accelerator(car was off) opening the butterfly
and sprayed about a 1/3 a bottle of carby cleaner inside the TB.

i didnt do it while the car was on because it was too loud and didnt want the neighbours to complain again. they hate my car..

turned the car on and revved it at about 3500 untill the engine normalised then went for a spirited drive. fixed my idling problem and think my car is a little more responsive aswell.
