Hi Guys
I was wodnering if i do a full exhaust upgrade on my D16Y4 do i have to change the standard cat or can i leave it, I heard that if i leave the standard cat that the fuel economy will be better than if i was to get a hi flow cat

Need some help guys
Cheers

hi-flow : more HP
if you want high flow, no point keeping ur cat, coz its a full exhaust.
not 100% sure though..

Frankie

yeh i thought that aswell flow better, what size piping 2inch all the way through

Your fuel economy won't be worse with a high flow cat. If you have a post-cat O2 sensor, make sure you get a defouler to avoid CEL.

wat does the last bit mean

If you have an O2 sensor after your cat, then you might need to get an extension fitting to get the O2 sensor out of the way of the exhaust gas so that you don't get a Check Engine Light warning you of low cat efficiency.

i'd go for 2.25" or 3.. more bigger, better flow

25-05-2009, 06:57 PM
Just get whatever size the rest of your exhaust is.

Frankie
25-05-2009, 06:58 PM
i dont know whcih size for the whole thing people say 2 and 2.25 not sure

jdmEG5
25-05-2009, 07:06 PM
mate, go for 2.25". Works well for others and should work well for you too. Grab some CAI too or pod filter, makes that growling sound wen u rev it up.

JDM-EGG
25-05-2009, 07:39 PM
LOL well for ur car, since its just a single cam D series .. u can either go for 2inch or 2.25

id say stick with your 2inch cause u wont feel any big gains from 2.25inch anyways maybe in the top end.

i got a twimcam d16a8 and im going 2.25 for sure since its twin cam.

either mate, 2inch or 2.25inch should be fine, its up to you and ur setup

o and get a HIGH FLOW CAT, u will feel the response for sure.

cheers

beeza
25-05-2009, 08:50 PM
Definately get a hi-flow cat, otherwise the whole system will suffer cause of the old restricting cat in there.

Yeah I would stick with 2" because you may lose some low end power with a 2.25" system and you don't want that.

Frankie
26-05-2009, 09:12 AM
okay guys looks like i will stay with 2 inch piping and will be getting a high flow cat i got a SRI already should sound good. when finished

i've running a 2.25' on my D17 and it seems to breathe alot easier. i'm not sure if its got a hi-flow cat but so far its running quiet well, seems to rev alot smoother at the higher revs than it did with my standard exhaust. throw up a vid when you're done with it :P

hehe yeah but better to have it all the same size if possible,no bends or nuttin'!

The twin loop gives such a nice note,I still love the sound!! Unbelieable really,I thought I would be sick of it by now.

Looking from the pic, looks like press bent.

I'd go 2" mandrel bent. 2.25" is a bit too with minimal mods.

26-05-2009, 01:42 PM
bent system is a good cheap option (I had to get 3ft of it made up again when I installed the sway bar as the old system clashed lol, it was a whole $60 to bend up and weld a new bit in, lol)

the diff in anything on the d engine is minimalistic

Frankie
26-05-2009, 03:02 PM
lol D16Y8 similar kw to the y4 but the y8 is vtec????

beeza
26-05-2009, 03:24 PM
The y8 is superior but not by much at all. That's why y8 or y1 parts are popular for d16y builds cause they have better specs.

Frankie
26-05-2009, 03:36 PM
mm okay interesting thanks for the info

beeza
26-05-2009, 03:46 PM
Don't be disheartened with the y4 cause the y4 is an awesome engine!

Non Vtec is the choice for many because of the smooth linear power/torque curve.

I do love my y4! :)

Frankie
26-05-2009, 03:48 PM
yeh me 2 love them

http://download.cnet.com/FreeRip-MP3/3000-2140_4-10050140.html

My mate says download this program and follow the prompts.

Here's the description:

FreeRip is an easy to use application that can convert from audio CD to MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV and WMA. It also is a MP3 converter, and it can convert MP3 to WAV, OGG to MP3, WMA to MP3, WAV to FLAC, and so on.

Hey that engine bay is remarkable!!! The cold air intake second hose is attached directly engine (not the sensor one). Hey obliviously I know shit about engines and mods but I just hooked up a simolta and the lines were not great fits, can I attach directly to engine as you did and what is the reason for removing stock line? Please be patient as quite clear I am noob. I looped hose from tube into stock line but think this may defeat the purpose.

Thanks man i try to keep it very clean but if i have to sir con and power steering out it would look better but than wouldnt have the luxurys. Post up a photo of your egine bay so i can have a look at it. but in the kit i got it came with this pipe (thin plastice tube) connector so i could get rid of that stock pipe your talking about and connect straight to the engine block.

but iam going to be hooking up my catch in a couple of weeks. that might change they layout of it.

thanks Frankie for response. I got a few pics. There was a plasticy tube supplied but I found that stock fittings had 3 parts. 1 to manifold, 2 to trottle control and third to bottom of engine. Please advise if 2 and 3 can be bypassed. My air tube seems to be floating too and bracket supplied does not fit anywhere...do I drill into tube and make homemade bracket to strut sides or go super noob and cable tie for peace of mind.

ay man i had very similar item from ebay have to say it was crap didnt like it at all. yeh use that plastic tube that came with it, get rid of the two pipe that are joint together in pic 1, also did you put a hole in ur front strut wall for the brakcet. man i think you should invest in a Injen or ice box or even k and N one. that fit perfect and look 100 times better aswell

Why not get a double hinged billet hose clamp similar to this and attach it to the bracket so it sits beneath the pod. Then just bend and bolt the bracket to the car body.

http://racespec.com.au/images/billet_clamp_1.jpg

That way it will look nice, wont move and allows the pipe to still be easily removable.

**Looking at the third pic again you can see that the hooked end of the bracket is meant to loop around the existing hose clamp before it is tightened. Then you just bend the bracket as needed and bolt it to the car body. The tightening of the clamp against the pod is what holds the bracket to the pipe.
