what's involved in rebuilds? just remachining the stuff required and putting it within tolerances again? or is that reconditioning? sure sounds like that. lol
rebuild/recon would come in different levels. from basic and full ball. if ur rings are leaking, u might be able to get away with a simple replacement. all depends on the conditition of the cylinders.

so technically they actually mean the same generic process but to different extents? okay, that settles it then. lol
rebuild = single process
recondition = full out
i wish i had the tools for all that. lol Thanks Weq

i called rob at hannys to get my eg si engine rebuilt for my conversion. he told me it would be $900 for new rings, gaskets, seals, and head service. if you want some good quality rings and new crank bearings i would say add on an extra $300 (?????)
thats what i heard
how many kms are on your engine???

If your blowing white smoke take it to a mechanic and ask for a quote, see what they say is wrong with it. It might not need a whole rebuild. Lots of places give you quotes and will take a look and tell you what's wrong without charging. I believe that Midas have soemthing like that. Find out what is really wrong before going for a rebuild cos as you said its bloody expensive.
O FYI a rebuild basically replaces all your pistons, all gaskets and engine bearings, cleanout and wack 'em back together. I've seen a few engine been rebuilt and they actually made more power after the rebuild than they did when they first got the car (second hand cars but).
But if your SURE ya gonna build i'd go to a reputable place Hannys would be my choice for a honda that's for sure. ;)

i dont think a rebuild replaces pistons unless you ask for that specifically. just replaces the rings. i could be wrong though :)
by my understanding an engine rebuild, does the gaskets, seals etc, your rings timing belt and general clean. it also includes a head service at hannys.
i am going with the crank bearings and better rings, which will cost a bit more, but i believe its worth it. ;)

A basic rebuild does not replace pistons etc - just all seals , piston rings etc - and ofcourse measure and make sure everything engine wise is still in spec + balanced out...then if something needs replacing - $$$ ontop. Coem to think of it im sure my lil Si engine would need a freshen up soonish :)

which is more of a wise choice. Rebuild my b16 or replace the whole motor?

You might be able to get a better engine instead of the rebuild, but yeah just make sure you get a decent engine, get it compression tested and don't believe what the importers have stuck on it as i ended up with the same problem when i brought a replacement engine (this was on another car)

personally i feel that if the price for a newer engine is almost the same price as the rebuild or whatever you are going to do. i would just get a newer or BIGGER engine. lol

Got a quote from Hannys performance, $1200 to fix the rings on my Civic VTi
Good pice :thumbsup:
Tho they said VTi rings are hard to kill and they may just be dirty from cheap oil uses
So to fix this you change the oil every 1000 to 2000k's about 5 times, making sure to change the oil filter every time
Also they said HONDA oil is the best shit round and to use it
