View Full Version : Review Review on N*Power Headers for D-series

Howdy all.
A couple of weeks ago i bought the N*Power D16 headers for my civic and today i finally put them on.
First off they are so much lighter than the stock headers.
Went for a quick drive before, I could feel that they instantly had a much better flow in all of the rev range, it feels great to drive the response is greatly improved.
I have a cannon muffler and with the stock headers it created a lot of drone, and now with the N*Power headers the drone has greatly decreased, and you can hear the engine as it ticks away while driving
A great cheap mod for anyone with a D engine
As for fitment it lined up perfectly and is held in place and feels sturdy just being bolted to the engine. The stock headers have two other mounting brackets for support but they fit fine without them. Probably the hardest part of the entire install was getting the O2 sensor out of the stock headers, a massive breaker bar was used and when i say massive i mean massive (old fence pole) lol.
All up, for $160 a very good investment for us D's.
Cheers, Shannon
Any questions about them, fire away.

Yeah the n*power design is pretty good for the price. It begins as 1.5inch then ends at 2inch. Other designs are straight 2, or 1.75 at the beginning and ends at 2inch. Thats pointless even if they are 4-2-1 because the power gain is from 4k rpm onwards and when casual driving your at the 2-3k rpm so u actually hinder your daily driving performance. With the N*power they are lighter then stock and slowly get larger till they reach the 2 inch end, which keeps some of the back pressure and gives u a boost lower down and towards the mid range.

had a bit more of a drive tonight with them, they have fully gone gold and the tops near the engine have turned blue/purple lol and im wishing i used gloves to put these on cos you can see all the finger marks :/

Just make sure you wash your header with a detergent and wipe it clean to get your finger grease off after installing. They're always go gold with a blue tinge, but this will help to avoid the stains :)
Where are the pictures !!!1

On a stock motor and as a first mod this would be a great design.
If I had of got these headers,I would have swapped them by now cause that size would be restricting down low.
BUT I did have to modify my engine to get that down low performance gain to be 'good'. i.e. I did a bit of power but it got me workin' to get it back.
The sound of this design sounds great if U ask me but just be prepared to swap them once U get ya engine going good because that size will restrict.
Know what I mean?

Yeh if you actually open up your motor and change cams, pistons etc. Then yeah these will be very restrictive. But in my case of just i/h/e. Its a good benefit.

hey mate is it true you cannot use stock cat ?
i had after market headers for my d series and 1 of the reason i sold it because i have stock cat, flange dont line up + after market headers are using donut gasket ?

that would be incorrect i used my stock Cat with these header, everything lines up perfectly and it came with a new donut gasket.

If your getting headers, you should get the whole system including cat. Just a header gives a tad of a benefit. The whole system working together is what gets you results. These headers will attach to your stock system. Yes the headers come with a donut gasket and gasket for the block and header attachment. Perhaps you purchased headers for a d17 or received the wrong header and that's why they didn't line up.

I bought these ages ago - Made a huge difference (with a metal high flow cat)
Great bang for buck
The only problem I have with these, is that the exhaust gasket is an uncommon shape, and i blew one...been using gasket goo ever since

Been fine just with the gasket glue?

Yeah been fine. But you have to be very careful not to hit big bumps or speed humps again because once it hardens, you can crack it and then you will have a really annoying exhaust leak

Hi, I just installed the headers in my car today and I've got a question.
Are your headers flush with the cat where you have the two spring bolts?
Because mine looks like this:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/6827/pict0002mf.th.jpg (http://img30.imageshack.us/i/pict0002mf.jpg/)
I've tightened the bolts/nuts up as far as they will go and I still have a gap and part of my gasket is exposed. I don't know if I have an exhaust leak but my car does sound a bit different since installing the headers.
I've got the same car as you btw, 1998 EJ8.

does your cat support the donut gasket ? or is it those flat ones ??
KeyMan
21-12-2010, 06:54 PM
Uimm, it's the stock cat and it's a doughnut gasket, it came with the N*Power headers.

na i meant your cat mate, some cats dont have the cruved groove for the donut gasket to go on.
happened to me so i just sold the headers.
KeyMan

Oh, well the old gasket is the exact same shape and size so I'm pretty sure my cat supports it.

i just did my header and 2" pipe all the way to my twinloop Xforce muffler, and is way too loud and i want to change back to stock ..... just wondering is it the header that making so much noise or the pipe (no resonator) by the way
so is N"power header, highflow cat and muffler, all 2"
i cant take the noise cause is so damn loud
do u rekon i should just change back to 1.75" or even the header to stock as well
way to loud to be legal
please reply ASAP

Its a combination of all those things, but most important, get a proper resonator put on, an that should play down the sound, having no resonator is just as bad as having no cat

I dont think u heard loud till u put on a 2.5inch cat back hahahaha, if u wanna be legal, id say get a noise test done at the exhaust place to confirm it, anything higher than 98 decibels say hello to EPA letters
I think the problem mite lie down to how the system was put an the products used, what sorta muffler used, and cat used, if its a cheap cat, dont expect much from it, Im not familar with Xforce products, so im not to sure as of the quality of there mufflers, but im sure a twin loop shouldnt be that loud compared to a cannon... sounds as if ur twin loop is as loud as some of the cannons we run lol

mugen is right lol. i got a 2.5: custom made system, even the down pipe if my headers is 2.5", cat is 2.5" pipe is 2.5" and a cannon with nothing inside 3". its a bloody straight pipe lol. gotta use a silencer to reduce the sound

Dude I told you the other night when I saw the car in person - it's not loud. As I already said the tone will change when the exhaust wears in and you'll get used to the sound - and if you're still worried about it then get a resonator.

mufflers will drone more as they get older

I never knew that hahahaha, learn something new everyday, and also, i noticed, that once the exhaust heats up, it changes its tone/sound as well, for mine, its raspy when starting, an still cold, but once it warms up, has a nice tone, thats more bearable to listen to lol
dougie_504
22-02-2011, 06:40 PM
Yes, but also for a new exhaust it will smell like burning for a short while and once it's been worn it the tone changes and it doesn't smell anymore...

just rescently mine has gotten louder. it's not the actually muffler it's the headers, i think. sometimes it really f**king annoys me lol. it's the ticking of the engine really loud and shit. what do you guys think? is it the headers or have the gaskets gone? because i'm tossing up to go back to stock
dougie_504
22-02-2011, 10:15 PM
'Ticking' sounds like something else - tappets?
1996_EK_Civic
22-02-2011, 10:18 PM
should have mention it only does it sometimes... doesn't on idle nor on slight acceleration, but more acceleration the more it sounds
mugen_ctr
24-02-2011, 11:13 PM
could be clutch bearings mayb... or even gearbox, worse, could be engine componets
Finally chucked on my N power headers... an i must say, its certainly much better than OEM.... low down it feels pretty much the same, WOT is much better, the engine revs up much smoothly, but the sound is simply gob smacked! lol, love it
PS i have a cat back system as well, cat im gonna leave it as it is, as its big enough to handle, an flow wise, unless boosting or running double power, havin a high flow cat to me is pointless
Sound wise, its still the same sound levels, theres certainly considerably more drone around 3000rpm, but other wise its nice sounding, again WOT is much louder
and weight wise, my god, cast headers are so dam heavy! N powers feel like a feather compared to oem headers

oh yea.... i got an exhaust leak LOL one of the bolts which joins the two parts of the headers fell off >.> thats why it was so loud, i'm hoping thats all

did it sound like a tractor with the leak? cause wen i first put the headers on, i forget to put the o2 sensor back on... lol, ooops thats how it sounded like
1996_EK_Civic
25-02-2011, 07:23 AM
probably sounds like a hi-pitched tractor lol, my mates old hyundi lanta... now that sounded like a tractor.. that thing was f**ked. but when i'm free get a new bolt and exhaust glue it up
mugen_ctr
26-02-2011, 05:16 PM
And also, did any notice that the revs pick up much faster in the low revs? im finding that im hitting 3-3.5k rpm to soon, if that makes sense lol
1996_EK_Civic
02-03-2011, 05:33 PM
ok, well i finally got around to half fixing my exhaust leak... i used a bolt off the stocker headers and put it on the N*Power ones and tightened all 3... no more engine sound :D
