View Full Version : What turbo on a H22A????

ok i've done some research and only found one thread in here but it was on a built h22a.i've also found that most of the us guys are using a t3/t4 type turbo.
so my question is what kind of turbo would you guys recommend for me? keeping in mind i want good low down response, decent power throughout the rev range and it to be running closest to it's best efficiency at around 7 psi.
also if you could include prices i may be looking at paying and whether thats a used or new price.
thanks.:)
very good low down, go with a GT28RS or if you want a little more power but power a little later than the 28 a GT30R wouldnt be bad
GT28RS can be had around the 1600 mark new, cant remember what the GT30R goes for...around 2k i think

what about a t3/t04e???
personally for a 2.2l, u can afford a bigger turbo. id go GT30 atleast. (pending if u are gonna push around 1bar of boost) killer mid and topend, i cant see a reason the dohc vtec head wouldnt spool it fairly quik! 3-4k!
note: any of the turbos mentioned can have as many configurations as u like. differnet covers will produce different results. for example a t3/t4 hyrbid can be made to work well with a 1.6l d-series (48. a/r) but can also provide good power for a larger 3l engine with a different config.

For a 2.2liter engine.....and you want to get it for cheap...why not a S15 turbo?
And 7psi is just the beginning of the efficiency range of most turbos nowadays...unless your talking about the tiny ones off jap micro cars....eg honda city turbo.. The S15 turbo runs at 8psi standard and can go up to 17psi if needed but only at short bursts. Any higher boost and you will need to change to another turbo. The GT28RS or disco potato as its commonly known is just a little bit better then the s15 turbo in terms of the top end. 320hp vs 300hp. It has even better response though.
If your really keen though....get a hks 25/30 turbo.....best street turbo. Exxy though. For a cheaper option, GT25/30 . Same turbo essenstially but without the custom housings that hks add to theirs....which helps its spool up time.

thanks for your info guys but i dont plan to do any internal work so i wont be going over 8psi max. so i am after a turbo that will be efficient at that level. im not looking for something that can be turned up to say 15psi as i wont be needing it. i want a turbo to match my set application, that way i can try and get the most efficient setup and power on low boost.

oh also i can get my hands on a manifold to fit any t3 type turbo so anyone got any recommendations for that because i can save some money here but so i am looking probably at a t3/to4e but what trim size for my application would work the best???

wow.. been waiting for this along time..
MR-VTEC. u got the same idea as me..
i been asking round.. a T28 from a S14 or a T28BB*ball bearing* is pretty alright already.. SPool is smooth as.. also sufficient if running about 7-8 PSI
dam guys..
MR-VTEC.. are u gonna buy a Manifold or custom it?
cause i need one as well

well it depends on what turbo i go with, as to whether i'll go a custom manifold or just buy one. alot of the us guys use a t3/t4 type turbo on their setups so there are a few off the shelf manifolds you can get like 'maxrev' for example. but if i dont go that way i'll have to get one custom made.
have you got anything else for your setup yet or are you still looking?

If you get a t3/t4 turbo you would never use it to its best ability at 7psi and so you might be wasting a bit of money in getting one. It does give you the head room to later up the boost if you wanted more power in the future.
With thet3/t4 you should get the smallest housings possible.

get a 60-1 type turbo with either .63 or .86 rear depending on what power u are chasing.
will support 600hp and should work a treat.
even when i was running the car in, i had it at 8psi with no ignition timing on the microtech and only revved to 6k it still made 175hp and thats on lower compression then a standard h22a.
so if u decide to run about 8psi, i dont see why u wouldn't make 150fwkw's.
with that type of power u'll be surprising alot of turbo cars.

ive been wanting to sell my old turbo/manifold/computer for a while but sooo many people talk so much and dont buy...
BUT here goes again...
ct26 turbo (hiflowed slightly bigger than a T04) done less than 5000km can handle 20+ psi
custom manifold to suit h22a + turbo (ceramic coated)
microtech LT8
FOR SALE $3000
i was running this set up with intercooler and a 2 1/4 exhaust. response down low is amazing. also with stock internals produced 150 kw atw @ 10 psi.
let me know if your serious!

what quarter mile times is your car doing roughly with the h22a and turbo, and why you selling it.

Yes iam looking into purchasing a 5th gen vti-r prelude in the near distant future!
How would a turbo'ed h22a do against such cars like r33 gts-t's, s15 200sx or wrx in slight modified form - e/h/c. The 3 cars mentioned are an alternative to the prelude but basically i want a fast street car, fast off the lights, more about straight line performance than cornering
thanks, sorry for the hi-jack

It would be pretty much lineball with an S15....slightly faster then wrx and as for the r33......dunno.
Ive owned both a wrx and S15 so i know how fast both go.
off the lights, you will have a disadvantage being FWD and will need a good setup to be quick off the mark. Rolling start, it will be easily quicker than a lightly modified WRX or R33 and will be slightly quicker than a slightly modified S15. Based on my experiences with those kinds of cars

these cars would have no chance... and i speak from experience. even from stand still i smashed these cars. at least 3 car lengths on most modded turbo cars.
reason im selling is cos i have upgraded to bigger set up!

hey man thanks for the offer but i already have a microtech lt8 with a dash unit and i recieved delivery of my manifold this morning:D, thanks Blitz. oh by the way it has a t3 flange.
so back to my question does anyone have any recommendation on size for my turbo? im getting a t3/to4e but not too sure on a trim size as yet, dont forget im only after something that works almost near it's best efficiency at around 7-9psi and i am after a fairly quick spool although still want decent power throughout the rev range.
thanks.

u'll find that u will be quicker than most turbo cars, but the s15 with mods will still be faster.
But back to ur turbo question. It seems that ur keen on purchasing the t3/4 so u may as well purchase it. Its an ok turbo for wat u wanna do. Keep in mind though that u'll want to upgrade to more hp in the future so see if the turbo can support this power.

i am builiding my setup for a set application, i dont wanna run more than 7-9psi. i am not looking for something that can be turned up to make more power later i just want something that fits my manifold, can be quite efficient at what im asking it to do and not be too expensive aswell. thats why i am leaning towards a t3/to4e, they are relatively cheap brand new and can do what i am asking. given they arent the most advanced or newest turbo out on the market but i dont wanna go throwing fat wads of cash at my ride so i can produce 300+hp, i am only after a turbo that will do well at 7-9psi and not break the budget.;) . so anyone got any recommendations. thanks.

are they internal or external gated?

external gate would only add to the cost.
MR-VTEC

yeah im going external gate as my manifold has an external wastegate port. im getting a 38mm tial.

And WPN yes you smashed those cars but mate...your car wasnt slightly modded as stated by someone else.
If those cars were modded to the same degree as yours......it would be much much closer....well the S15 would be anyways :D Wrx's are shit for drags.

nah seriously... one night in goin to the city had 3 lanes... on my left a s14 zorst fmount and other stuff i dont know... he told me he was runnin 12psi
on my right and s15 with similar set up, these guys were teasin me as i was only cruisin.. so i let them know i was boosted by letting off some pressure!
they freak out and wanna run so i said cool... (cut a long story short) i smashed em and i mean smashed!!. these guys freaked out and the s14 said nice run mate well done and asked how much boost and all that... s15 was a loser and started making excuses.. WHATEVER.. i was running 15psi max and it was a rolling start...the dude in the s14 said dont listen to him (s15) cos he talks shit.. i asked s15 how much boost he was runnin and he said only 10psi.. hard to believe..
so there is a real story, dunno what you heard but there it is. (i have no need to make up stories either)

-air filter
-front mount
-15psi
-2.1/4 exhaust

-ct26 hiflowed turbo
-ALL WITH STANDARD INTERNALS AND INJECTORS
now...i dont think thats very modified at all
15psi and standard injectors and internals? lol

Arnt the ct26 turbo's the same ones off the mr2 turbo and Rz supra's?
Actually now that you have stated what boost you were running, i can see how you smashed them.
2.2 liter on a high flowed ct26 turbo...you have the bigger turbo and start boosting earlier due to bigger displacement of engine (torque).
I would replace the injectors though :D
WPN.22R
09-04-2005, 11:07 AM
yeah thats what i used to run basic bolt on set up!! and yes 15psi on standard internals with standard injectors.my ct26 came from the gt4 celica (non ceramic).
i dont understand why people think that i talk crap? ive been told oooh dont turbo a honda engine ooh 15psi on stock internals oooh WHATEVER!!
theres enough people from this site that can vouch for what my car can do and has done
so stop hating and get back on topic.

to be able to beat an s15/r33, how must boost do you need to be running? is under 10psi sufficient?
When i get my prelude, iam budgeting say up to $10k max for the conversion. :)
ps. I know this is not on topic, but how would a civic coupe vti-r compare? both with about a $10k amount put into both.
thanks heaps guys :)
