View Full Version : 2002 CRV Steering noise problem
Hi Guys,
I have a 2.4L 2002 Auto CRV with a steering noise issue. The conditions that I can reproduce the noise is:
- the car is warmed up after driving for about 20 minutes
- come to a stop
- turn steering wheel about 20-45 degrees to the left (assuming the steering is straight) and let go of the steering.
- whistling / whirling noise is heard from inside the car. Very hard to hear the noise outside due to engine noise.
Note: turning the steering wheel to the right would stop the noise.
The car has been back to the dealer numerous times under warranty for this reason. They tried tightening the belt, topping up the power steering fluid. Replaced the power steering pump. Replaced the power steering pump belt and pulley. The warranty has runned out after the previous attempt with the belt and pulley.
What do you guys reckon the problem is? What are my options with Honda with this issue?
Thanks,
V
Extra info: the noise is also heard when the steering is a bit to the left when driving and also only happens once it's warmed up.

how about turn to the left more than 45 degree???
Still does. But only when you let go of the steering, which has a little bit of kick back. Then the noise comes.

My CRV also has the same problem. But the difference is full lock to the right.
The sound is like an echoing noise. No solutions yet as well :(
The steering rack probably?
Needs either lubrication or replacement.
But then again, if it is the steering rack, I can't understand how Honda could've missed that
Good luck with it.

My family's CRV had a similar problem with whirring sounds upon slowing down and around corners. I've only driven the car after the problem occured so i cant be sure its the same, but on my car it was the CV joints that were the problem. Replacing them fixed the issue.

hey, i got the solution for you, you own the older model crv?
i went to hannys and they told me it was my centre diff oil that needs changing, i got that done and i never heard the sound again!
so just change the centre diff oil and the sound will be gone
awesome work at hannys

it's your 4WD-DPS fluid guys..... VERY common with the CRV
just take it to a honda service dept or a honda specialist like hanny's and they'll sort u out. very easy fix
(i get like a rep point for that yeah?:p )

The bottom of the steering column, near where it conects to the rack sometimes rubs on some of the insulation on the firewall..was very common on 94-96 Integras also..put you head down near the pedals and get some one to slowly turn the wheel to recreate noise..hope this helps
