View Full Version : Wrenchin' With Trav - Eg Koni Yellow Shock Install
Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself, nor OzHonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!
Aim: To install a set of 4 KONI Yellow Shock Absorbers on an EG Civic
Time: approx. 3hrs
Required:
- 12,14 and 17mm deep sockets
- 12,14 and 17mm ring spanners
- small round file
- rubber mallet
- a friend
- metric allen key set
- jacks etc.

I have been meaning to fit these shocks to my car for ages and i finally got around to it recently. This is a rough guide on how to install them on a car with lowered springs already fitted. These shocks are known as the 'best bang for buck' shocks around for hondas, and they were right but anyways, on with the wrenchin' :)
Step 1:
Get out your new Koni yellows shocks and use the instructions provided and put them together as much as u can without using the parts of the car. This is a good idea beacause u can check that there isnt any parts missing. Also now is the time to set the adjustable spring perch on each shock. Put together with all included bits should look like this:

Step 2:
Pop ur bonnet, jack the front of the car up and take the wheels off. Chock up the rear of the car as well. Remember to used good condition jackking equipment and be safe as you can here, u dont what an eg where your legs used to be.

Step 3:
Now remove the 2 12mm bolts(im missing one) holding the brake lines to the stock shock.

Step 4:
Now loosen but dont the 14mm bolt holding the shock to the wishbone.

Step 5:
Now loose and remove the 17mm bolt holdin the wishbone to the LCA. You wil have to grunt and groan to get this focker out because its holding your sussy together.

Step 6:
Now totally remove the 14mm bolt from the bottom of the shock. The wishbone wil now be free from the assembly.
Step 7:
Undo the top 2 14mm bolts(in the engine bay) holding the assembly in place. Support the assembly with the other hand because itll drop other wise.

Step 8:
Now wiggle the assembly round untill u can get it off the car, remove the wish bone as well if u want. Should look like this now:

Step 9:
Now its time to tear down the stock shock and transfer the needed parts to the koni yellow.

The instructions that come with the konis helps u with this, i wont go into it but there afew things to do. You have to remove the wish bone guide/brake line bracket off the stock shock and put it on the koni. You can do this by placing it in a vise and knockin it off with a rubber mallet.

you also have to file out the centre hole on the dust cover of the stock shock to accomodate the konis thicker rod. Also transfer over bump stops etc.

Step 10:
Once the shock is all put back together its time to install it onto the car, this ofcoarse is the reversal of removal, go to it! Should look like now:

Step 11:
Now its time to hit the back ;) lol. Ok drop the front and jack up the rear with stand etc. Chock the front wheels also. Then remove ur enkeis, if u have other wheels thats tough luck, but take them off anywyas :p
Undo and remove the 14mm bolt thats holds the assembly to the LCA.

Step 12:
Undo and remove the 14mm bolt holding the swaybar to the lca, if u dont have one dont worry bout it, just make sure u get one asap!! :p

Step 13:
Remove the 14mm bolt holding on the trailing arm.

Step 14:
Now the assembly shouldnt be gettin ready for removal. Undo the top 14mm bolts(in the back) holding the assembly in. Now wrestly and man handling the assembly untill u can squeeze it out.

Step 15:
Now pretty much copy Step 9 and pull the shock down and substitute with the koni. Then reverse removal and re install:thumbsup: Should look like this:

Step 16:
All done woot!! drop the car back down, recheck everything is tight and adjust ur shocks as u see fit. Just be cautious on ur fisrt drive because of the change in car behaviour. It also might be a good idea to get a wheel alignment after u fit these too. Have fun with ur new shocks, u know i will!! :D

I like the new stance :thumbsup: :).
FYI, when doing mine I personally didnt remove the wishbone just moved it enough out of the way to slide the suspension in and out.
Also I found it took me longer to do the rears (although somewhat easier) as it took me forever to disassemble the interior (which you need to do in an ek to access the top of the suspension). I think the eg has much easier access doesnt it?

that knob u turn that says "firm", is that the damping? do u just turn it to set it to soft/hard?

as for ride, these r ****in sex!! i drive around on the lowest setting front and rear and drive along side a minitruck, i look UP and see him bumpin and bouncing all over the road! bahahaha!!!! these r ****in bangin!!!! :D
these handle oh so good! im rockin a 'bren spec' damper setting and yeah its stiff but still smooth on shit roads. best mod i have ever done i wish i never took so long to do it :rolleyes:
but anyways, i dont mean to plug but these realy DO change ur car, im loving my eg now, cant w8 to hit the hills.:D

Definitely agree with that man!! You need to get yourself some better springs and you'll be even more surprised!! :D Good to see you now know why i love mine so much :thumbsup:

yeah man i recommend some konis, they r so nice, perfect oem fitment and so low and so nice and stiff, makes me smile everytime i hit a lil tight corner :thumbsup:

I wish I had the confidence to pull apart my baby like that... and some Jack stands too so I could get under the sucker. I can't bring myself to venture past audio, cosmetic and basic mechanicals like cold air induction..

there is a lil clip that holds the perch up, simply move it between the grooves.
i have a DIY write up of when we put some konis on a CD5, up soon. :thumbsup:

They are just the shocks.
hey trav, i just installed my koni yelows, sucsessfully thanks to your write up.
i think i might have set the damper too hard.... can the damper control be adjusted from the top of the shock without taking the shock off?? or do i need to pull the shock out then adjust it??

Easy -
Front = open bonnet and adjust each shock top
Rear = open boot / take off shock cover plastic and adjust the shock top
Remember clockwise = increase damper
counter-clockwise = decrease damper
And from what ive found 2 turns = 100%. So , 1 turn = %50 etc.
glad it worked out sam now gimme some rep LOL :p
and yeah what ben sed. be careful and play around with settings to see whats best.
i had 100% front and 80% rear :thumbsup:
so when you are adjusting the shock, you turn the part with the allen key sized hole or the hex shaped bolt?
ahhh no matter i just found out mine are adjustable at the bottom.
