ok i tried searching the forums but cant find anything similar.

today i installed a skunk 2 catback on my b16 and i noticed ive been getting a very bad smell like something burning. at times theres alot of smoke coming from out with this same stench.

i have stock headers and cat.

is this because the exhaust is wearing in or have i missed something?

thanks in advance

If its just the catback, then you'd probably miss something.
Or is the skunk2 catback brand new?
Probably something to do with no carbon buildup yet compared to the old exhaust and its carbon buildup.

So you would smell it heaps more.

the exhaust is brand new out of the box. i did however change my oil at the same time and this time instead of using the honda stuff i went for mobil 1 5w-30 super synthetic. my car has had no oil burning issues in the past and hadnt been driven for about 5 days prior to this. cant think of anything else that could have affected this

the smell is from the cat-back. uninstall and return it =p JK
its normal for a new exhaust to smell like somethings buring.

ah k the panic is over. drove it for over a hundred k's and the smoke has gone and the smell is pretty much gone aswell. i was just worried as with my old car i had a cat back made for me and i had a total different experience with it wearing in. i must say of the shelf items are much better performance wise after this experience though

its the oil coating from the steel

i'd assume it was just oil that dropped on to your headers while you were checking the oil level on your dip stick
either way its burnt and gone away so it should be okay?

yep:thumbsup:

heat wrapping headers was worse due to the amount of oil in them... smoking out of the bonnet and smelling like fresh bread lol.

no they coat them with oil to stop any rust. If you drop oil you should wipe it off as it does burn off but leaves a nasty mark

my wrapped headers had heaps of steam as i wet them before i put them on.

It stops the wrap from breaking when you stretch them over

nah it wasnt the oil from the dip stick and after amost 2 weeks theres no smoke and smell. althought im getting a tiny rattle when i reverse from the heatshield thats at the first bend of the b-pipe between the exhaust and fuel tank. ive tried bending this thing but the gaps too small and its kinda annoying. is it dangerous removing this as the exhaust will be right next to the fuel tank? ive thought about heatrapping the section but id rather not

help appreciated

why not unbolt it, bend it then bolt it back on?
